As 2010 draws to an end and 2011 begins Rome offers art lovers visiting Rome this winter an exceptional array of exhibitions ranging from Van Gogh to Italian contemporary artists, from Palazzo Farnese Renaissance art to Pablo Echaurren via the City of Gods and the Golden treasures from the National History Museum in Bucharest and much more this winter well into 2011. Let’s begin with Palazzo Farnese and its five hundred years of history between art and politics to discover the colorful history of the “fasti farnesiani”.

The doors of Rome’s Palazzo Farnese just opened last week on December 17th for a landmark exhibition to celebrate the Farnese building’s 500 years of history: from the Renaissance to the French Embassy. “The most imposing Italian palace of the 16th century”, according to Sir Banister Fletcher, it was designed for the Farnese family in 1517 and later expanded when Alessandro Farnese became Pope Paul III in 1534. Built and decorated by the most important and famous architects of the Renaissance age, including including Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, Giacomo della Porta, and Michelangelo who redesigned the courtyard and the third story of this monumental building adding an architrave to give a central focus to the facade, above which is the largest coat-of-arms with papal tiara Rome had ever seen. While admiring the Farnese palace facade do not miss the two large granite basins moved here during the 16th century from the Baths of Caracalla to stand as fountains in the Piazza Farnese. Palazzo Farnese housed the famous Farnese family collection of classical sculptures, including the famous sculpture from Greco-Roman antiquity known as the Farnese Hercules, paintings and frescoes, precious gems and other treasures. Most of the Farnese collection ended up in Naples at the National Archeological Museum and at the Capodimonte Museum but are now back in Rome for the exhibition to be displayed on their Renaissance settings. French museums like Louvre, Chambord and Ecouen along with other Italian and international art galleries have also contributed to the 150 paintings, statues, drawings, tapestries and coins included in this remarkable exhibition that runs until April 27, 2011.

As the owner of an Italy based tour planning company I happen to read a lot of Italy travel books and Susan Van Allen‘s Italy travel book “100 Places in Italy Every Woman Should Go” is an informative, fascinating, entertaining book, and certainly a must if you plan to visit Italy. I am glad Susan accepted to offer offer my fellow Italy lovers the opportunity to read her take on the most amazing park in Italy.

The Park of the Mosters in Bomarzo, Italy.

In 1564 when his wife died, Prince Vicino Orsini dedicated this place to her. He called it his Sacred Grove. In 1954, Giovanni Bettini found it abandoned, cleaned it up, and renamed it The Park of the Monsters—better for marketing. It’s actually a combo of the two names, which is what makes it so uniquely alluring. It’s set on a wooded hillside where you meander along gravel paths under sun-dappled light and then along the way, popping up in haphazard places, you come upon immense bizarre statues of mythological creatures.

There are about two dozen of these creations in all, most carved directly from the hill’s rocky outcroppings, which explains the unplanned arrangement. There’s a winged mermaid, a sleeping nymph, a sphinx, a colossal Ceres, a tortoise, a whole house that’s set up purposely tilted to astonish you. The most famous of all is a giant screaming monster’s head—so giant you can walk into its mouth, where you’ll find a tongue turned into a picnic table. The inscription carved into this sculpture sums up the park’s surreal atmosphere: All Reason Departs. There’s a lot of mystery surrounding what the heck Orsini was thinking when he created this place. Some look at the statues’ tortured faces and say it was his expression of grieving for his wife, Giulia Farnese. But Orsini began this project before she died.

Their marriage was a good one. He was a military officer, gone a lot while Giulia took over the small town Bomarzo reins. He, of course, had his share of other women, during the marriage and after she died. As far as he knew, Giulia was a perfect, faithful wife. Twenty years after the Sacred Grove was completed Orsini built a temple in her honor that’s the most logical structure in this whole place. The Sacred Grove seems to be more of an expression of Prince Orsini’s intriguing, artsy character. While everybody else in those High Renaissance days was building grand, structured gardens to flaunt their wealth, the Prince turned his back on all that, wanting to create something that was not at all pretentious. It’s not even attached to his castle, but farther down the hill.

Also he didn’t have the money to compete with the Farneses and the d’Estes, so instead of grandeur, he went for shock and awe. Wherever a stone jutted out of the hill, he’d have his workers sculpt it according to his whim. He was a creative type who wrote poems and surrounded himself with the literati. This was his place for contemplation and meditation. It was his dream world where he mixed images from classical Greek, Roman, and Asian times. Like every other prince who had a garden, Orsini had illustrious guests come to visit. But he was always glad when they left, preferring the pleasures of simple country life and his shepherd girls. While other Renaissance gardens were kept up by families over succeeding generations, his was forgotten. Only the locals knew of it, and believed it was a haunted place. In 1938, Salvador Dali, in the midst of a creative crisis, heard about the Sacred Grove, left Spain, and cut his way through a tangle of weeds to see this “sleeping garden.” He became so inspired he made a film that included it and painted The Temptation of Saint Anthony that featured an image of an elephant— clearly inspired by one of the park sculptures. Giovanni Bettini bought the park in 1954 and restored it back to life. A visit here is a relaxing, enchanting experience, where you enter into the mythological dream world of the Prince.

Golden Day > Wander around the Sacred Grove. There’s a camp lodge-style snack bar there, where you can get a caffè and panino. Eat and stay a short drive north at agriturismo Castello di Santa Maria, a beautiful former convent surrounded by olive groves that serves up exquisite meals.

Need to get an idea on how much you’re going to spend eating out in Rome?

• By law restaurants, bars, cafes, wine bars, deli shops, market stalls and so on are obliged to display the price list in euro and in certain circumstances the unit price (the price per kilogram) for all products
• By law menus or food lists must include the price of each individual item, including the dishes of the day
• Bread is free of charge, and there should be no cover charge
• Always ask for a receipt and check that prices match those stated in the menu
• Frozen food or dishes using frozen ingredients should always be clearly reported in the menu, usually with asterisks (*) or small stars
• Italy offers very good wines that you can enjoy by the glass or by the bottle! Always ask for the wine list and check the prices in order to avoid unwelcome surprises
• In the event of a disagreement over the bill call the Municipal Police (Vigili Urbani)
• Remember that any guest in a restaurant is entitled to order just one course and he/she is no under any obligation to order a full meal

In Rome less than a mile away from the Aurelian walls raises one of the four Rome Papal Basilicas, the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (San Paolo Fuori le Mura in Italian).

Around the year AD 65 the Apostle Paul was sentenced to death and because he was Roman, he was taken outside the walls of Rome to be executed and buried. A church was built over the spot where he was beheaded and although illegal many Christians came to pray at Saint Paul’s tomb. Once Christianity was legalized in AD 313 the Emperor Constantine built a small church over the saint’s grave. A short time later a larger basilica was built in place of Constantine’s church which was expanded again in the 8th century. Until the 16th century when a new Saint Peter’s was built to claim the title of the largest church in Christendom, Saint Paul Outside the Walls was the largest church in Rome.

The church as we see today is the result of a 19th century reconstruction. In 1823 a fire destroyed the Basilica and most of the artworks adorning it. From the original basilica remained only the magnificent 14th century mosaics by Pietro Cavallini, the richly decorated ciborium by Arnolfo di Cambio, and the cloister with its Cosmati pavement.

An imposing statue of Saint Paul greets us as we enter the vast Neoclassical quadriportico (an open space surrounded by porticoes on all sides). The interior has 5 naves adorned with 80 monolithic columns from the original Basilica and frescoes. The large triumphal arch at the end of the huge nave is fully decorated with Cavallini mosaics depicting Christ’s Benediction.

These decorations were originally found on the facade that was destroyed in the fire, but were later reinstalled after a full restoration in the 19th century. The Ciborium (canopy) by Arnolfo di Cambio that surmounts the main altar is among a masterpiece. Four columns of red porphyry, surmounted by capitals covered in gold leaf, support the meticulous decoration of the steepled roof.

The Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament, where we can admire Carlo Maderno’s decorations, is magnificent. A visit to Saint Paul Outside the Walls is not complete without having enjoyed its beautiful cloister and strolled around its spiral columns adorned with tiny weaving of colored mosaics.

The light that filters through the palms of the neighboring garden, the silence enforced by heavy walls of the adjacent monastery, and the sound of water from the small fountain make this a place beyond time.

Unusual things to know about Saint Paul Outside the Walls:

The interior perimeter of the Basilica is decorated with medallions that depict the portraits of all Popes including Benedictus XVI. A pointed light illuminates the portrait of the current Pope.

Legend has it that the world will end when the empty medallions run out. Only about 14 are left!

It always possible to recognize Saint Paul by his iconographic attributes: A sword and a book. Legend tells us that Saint Paul was a Roman soldier (hence the sword) who was converted to belief in the Holy Scriptures (the book) by an appearance of Christ on the Road to Damascus.

One of the entrance doors to the Basilica is the so-called Holy Door, made entirely of bronze. This door is opened only during Jubilee years, when it allows the Christians who pass through it to have all their sins pardoned.

The setting is modern but elegant, the service is friendly and the Italian dishes are very well prepared by Chef Bowerman. There’s a tasty set menu at € 55 and an excellent list of Italian wines.

Ristorante Alberto Ciarla

Seafood lovers discovered Alberto Ciarla’s restaurant long time ago. Using only top quality ingredients Mr. Ciarla delivers tasty and balanced seafood dishes. Good selection of French wines and nice outdoor tables in the very pleasant Piazza San Cosimato in Trastevere.

Agata e Romeo

One of the very top restaurants in Rome with an excellent reputation that has spread well beyond Rome limes. Antico Arco is a very popular and romantic restaurant located on top of the Janiculum Hill just a short walk from the amazing terrace overlooking Rome. Foodies will love the wide cheese selection as well as the extensive wine list with a lot of French labels.

Located in the snobbish Prati quarter L’Arcangelo offers very good food at very reasonable price. Ingredients are top quality and are the base for a menu that will please almost everyone ranging from traditional roman fares to seafood via creative dishes and daily specials. Here you can taste one of the best Pasta alla Amatriciana in Rome or the traditional offal. Wine selection is expanding fast and the service is attentive but relaxed. The design of the restaurant is quite simple and reminds of a Trattoria from the 1950′s.

La Rosetta

Since 1966 La Rosetta is arguably the best seafood restaurant in Rome located in a narrow cobblestoned alley just off the Pantheon. A dinner at La Rosetta with all the trimmings can cost you €200 or more per person so why not taking advantage of the delicious lunch set menu to taste the best raw fish Rome has to offer in a very romantic Rome back alley. Il Convivio Troiani

After a dinner at Il Convivio you’ll realize the difference between a good place and a great restaurant. Il Convivio is one of the top restaurants in Rome where to enjoy an unforgettable Italian meal just off the Navona Square. Antonello Colonna used to run one of the best restaurants in the roman countryside town of Labico then in 2007 he decided to move on and conquer foodies in Rome. In just one year he succeeded in his venture of bringing the best Roman traditional food and ingredients back to Rome! Chef Colonna’s creations are never dull and he manages to combine Lazio best products to deliver outstanding Roman dishes with a creative twist. A meal here is an experience to reccomended. Open Colonna Restaurant is located on the top floor of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni museum on Via Nazionale and opens from 11 AM offering tasty lunch set menus at €15, pre-dinner aperitifs at €10, and an excellent brunch on weekend at €28.

Il Pagliaccio

In just five years il Pagliaccio has made a name for itself as one of Rome’s top restaurants and credit must go to Anthony Genovese’ s cooking skills and creative dishes. The restaurant is very pleasant just a short walk from Campo dè Fiori and the service spotless. Very hard to point out a particular dish as menus change frequently however seafood is really tasty, try the lobster salad, as well as the sweets like the chocolate on rhubarb sauce. If you plan to have dinner at Il Pagliaccio make sure you book a table well in advance and allow at least 3 hours for your meal.

La Pergola

La Pergola is described as the best hotel restaurant in Italy but in my humble opinion is close to be the best restaurant in Italy thanks to Chef Heinz Beck. Location is breathtaking, service is outstanding, wine list is made of two tick books, and the food is just from another world. La Pergola is the epitome of fine dining and the perfect place for your splurge honeymoon meal in Rome or for any other special event in Rome where money is not an issue. Book well in advance, wear your smart jacket or evening gowns, take the lift to the top floor of the Rome Cavalieri and be prepared for a memorable Rome dining experience!

The Rome historic Jewish Quarter houses one of the oldest Jewish communities in Europe and the longest, uninterrupted, existing Jewish community in the world.

Although Rome is home to the Pope Jews have been in Rome longer than Christians, as the first Jewish community of Rome goes back to the 2nd century BC. The Jewish Ghetto in Rome is located in the rione Sant’Angelo, in the area surrounded by today’s Via del Portico d’ Ottavia, an ancient Rome structure built by emperor Augustus in the name of his sister Octavia and close to the enchanting Tiber island and the ancient Theater of Marcellus. Since the medieval era the Porticus was used as a fish market which lasted up to the end of 19th century and this role is remembered by the name of the 8th century annexed church: Sant’Angelo in Pescheria or St. Angelus in the Fish Market. Rome’s Jewish Ghetto was the last remaining ghetto in Western Europe and it is now one of the most charming and eclectic neighborhoods in Rome with typical restaurants serving up some of the best traditional Roman cuisine in Rome. Only in the Rome Jewish quarter you are able to find and taste the traditional Roman Jewish cuisine including Carciofi alla Giudia, Jewish fried artichokes, fresh seafood and kosher pizza.

Tucked behind the ancient Portico d’Ottavia, here you’ll feel like if you were eating in ancient Rome with the Teatro di Marcello in sight. Giggetto serves good Roman and Jewish cooking in a friendly setting. Best bets are Jewish-style artichokes, fried cod filets, chicory shoots with anchovy sauce (puntarelle) and stuffed zucchini flowers. Book in advance if you want a table just off the ancient Porticus of Ottavia.

Taverna del Ghetto Kosher | Euro 40 |

This restaurant located in the heart of the Jewish ghetto serves Kosher only genuine Jewish Roman dishes, under the supervision of the Rabbinical Office of Rome. Best bets are Jewish-style artichokes, homemade pasta, anchovies with endive and lamb.

Yotvata | Euro 30 |

This very nice and elegant restaurant facing the the 16th century Palazzo Cenci, built on the remains of a medieval castle that rose from the ruins of a Roman circus, serves excellent kosher Roman Jewish dishes like spaghetti with bottarga (salted roe), blue fish with endive and focaccia with zucchini marinade. The cuisine based on organic products is prepared under the supervision of the Rabbinical Office of Rome.

This restaurant was established in 1860 and it is probably one of the best and most elegant jewish restaurants around the Rome’s Ghetto. Beside traditional jewish dishes here you’ll find also authentic roman dishes like tripe, tail and pajama together with a first class wine list. During summer time reserve a table in the lovely outdoor garden.

No signs but you’ll probably find this small and unpretentious restaurant because of the waiting lines of people outside the restaurant waiting to taste amazing homemade pasta and traditional roman jewish dishes prepared with seasonal ingredients and what is available from the nearby Campo dè Fiori market.

Ba” Ghetto | Euro 35 |

This elegant Kosher restaurant located in the heart of the Jewish quarter serves not only traditional Roman Jewish dishes but also middle east delicacies like cous cous, falafel and hummus. Very good wine list and friendly service. A cheaper alternative to the Ba” Ghetto could be found at its sister restaurant the Oriental Food Kosher located near Piazza Bologna, a sort of Kosher fast food offering a very wide selection of Mediterranean, Middle-Eastern and Israeli dishes.
