Rome visitors in 2011 will enjoy a great deal of art exhibitions ranging from Van Gogh to contemporary art, from Palazzo Farnese Renaissance art to futurist artist Pablo Echaurren via Teotihuacan City of Gods at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni and the amazing Golden treasures from Romania’s Museums at the Imperial Forum museum. 2011 is going to be another year of unforgettable shows in Rome.

Ancient Treasures from Dacia in Rome at the Imperial Forum Museum

Until April 3, 2011 the ancient ruins of the Trajan’s Market form the backdrop for the exhibition of over 140 gold and silver priceless artifacts all discovered within the territory of Romania, known as Dacia during ancient Rome times. Famous for its goldmines since prehistoric times the Dacia region became known throughout the world for its goldsmiths and this exhibition features gold spiraled bracelets (2^nd Century B.C.) each one weighting 2,2 pounds, a ceremonial sword (17^th Century B.C.), religious artifacts, exceptional treasures like a beautiful Greek-style helmet (4^th Century B.C.), and little gold plaques (2^nd Century A.D.) together with jewels from the tombs of the Barbarian princes and the Pietroasa treasures that belonged to the Ostrogoth or Visigoth (5 Century A.D.) royal family.

On display abroad for the first time in more than 30 years the artifacts of this priceless collection are on loan from the National History Museum in Bucharest and seven other Romanian museums. In hosting the show the Imperial Fora Museum is also displaying for the first time 6 sculptures of Dacians that used to be standing in the Trajan’s forum almost 2000 years ago. Due to the stunning settings this exhibition is especially suitable for families visiting Rome with children who want to get out off the beaten path and enjoy a day in the life of ancient Rome.

MAXXI Museum of the 21^st Century | Italian Contemporary Art | Nervi at the MAXXI

The MAXXI museum is a stunning piece of architecture and an amazing venue for exhibitions of contemporary art but it is also a place to experiment innovative visual and linguistic forms of art. Until March 20^th 2011 Maxxi hosts an exhibition of works by the 4 finalists of the Italian Contemporary Art Award. These four young Italian artists bring to life with their art recent Italian events from the so called “anni di piombo” in the 1970′ to the current immigration concerns offering the opportunity to discover some of the new creative talents of the under 40′s generation.

Until March 20^th 2011 the Maxxi Museum dedicates a deepened show to Italian architect and engineer Pier Luigi Nervi focusing on Nervi’s works for the 1960 Rome Olympics. Out of curiosity do not miss the nearby Corso Francia Bridge designed by Nervi in the late 50′ best viewed from the nearby Ponte Milvio Bridge.

Alongside these works the museum is inaugurating a new archive project to document and promote the materials preserved in the collections of MAXXI Architecture that will be made available on-line in the Study Room of the Central Archives.

If you need any additional reason to visit the Maxxi Museum in Rome just consider that the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona just declared Zaha Hadid Architects’ MAXXI “Building of the Year 2010” defined by the jury of the WAF as an “Unwound Guggenheim”.

The end of May 2010 marks the beginning of a new era for the Eternal City projecting Rome into the world of avant-garde art and architecture. The cradle of Classicism and Baroque, revered for its past and wealth of art and architecture, Rome now looks toward to take her place among the capitals of contemporary art alongside New York, Paris and London with new contemporary museums and contemporary art events.

The first event is the long awaited opening of MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Art designed by the Anglo-Iranian architect Zaha Hadid, which takes place on May 30 with the launch of the project “Space”, the first thematic display of collections of art (Alighiero Boetti, Anish Kapoor, William Kentridge, Sol Lewitt, Giuseppe Penone, Grazia Toderi, and Francesco Vezzoli among others) and architecture inspired by the fluid forms of Zaha Hadid as an interpretation of the museum’s interdisciplinary vocation. It took 11 years and 150 million euros to build the coiled, concrete 27,000 square meter structure dubbed “the silvery boa” that houses two museums, MAXXI Art and MAXXI Architecture, and provides areas for live performances. Two other exceptional events taking place from May 27 to 30 will make of Rome the global capital of contemporary art, at least for a week.

Prior to the official opening of Macro Summer on June 1^stmodern art lovers on May 29 and 30 have the opportunity to tour the new wing of MACRO, Rome’s Museum of Contemporary Art, which will offer additional space with respect to the gallery housed in the old Peroni beer distillery. Beside enjoying the beautiful new wing designed by Odile Decq visitors will also be able to preview the exhibits in MACRO’s Via Reggio Emilia galleries. These include: “Aaron Young: Slippery When Wet”, “Jacob Hashimoto: Silence Still Governs Our Consciousness”, “Jorge Peris: Micro, Aureo, Adela”, “João Louro: My Dark Places”, “Oscar Savio: Architecture in Black and White” while works by three Italians, Gilberto Zorio, Luca trevisani and Alfredo Pirri, complete the line up.

The other event is the 3^rd edition of the international art fair and festival “Roma. The Road to Contemporary Art”. This four-day art fair, held in the pavilions of the former Testaccio slaughterhouse, will host around 70 international galleries offering a rich program of events, starred chef’s dinners, guided tours, meetings, conversations, presentations, artistic and musical performances, concerts, dj-sets, and video projections to animate daily the fair grounds at Macro Testaccio. Beside the Fair coordinates a set of events and exhibitions held around Rome. Cose Mai Viste (Things you have never seen), Accademia delle Accademie, Spirito, hosted in the Monumental complex of Santo Spirito in Sassia, Piazza d’Arte at the Casa dell’Architettura-Acquario Romano and the new program Academies Feast developed in cooperation with 9 among the most important international Academies and Cultural Institutes in Rome.

Despite nearly three thousand years of history Rome still has the strength to reinvent herself offering exciting new art venues and events amid the glories of antiquities.

Just off Camp de Fiori in the heart Rome an enchanting Renaissance palace designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger between 1516 and 1523 houses the little known Barracco Museum and its fine collection of priceless ancient sculptures.

The Museo Barracco located in the Farnesina Palace on the Street of the trunk makers features a prestigious collection of sculptures and art from ancient civilizations including Assyrian, Egyptian, Cypriot, Phoenician, Etruscan, Greek and Roman works, which Giovanni Barracco, a rich Italian nobleman, donated to the Municipality of Rome in 1904.

The Barracco museum hosts over 400 artworks, all very attractive, and makes a great half day tour in Rome just off the beaten path right between Campo dè Fiori and Navona square! The Barracco Museum due to its size and location offers families with kids and teens an alternative to bigger museums in Rome while providing an excellent introduction to Egyptian, Greek and Roman art and history.

The course of the Rome museum visit begins with the Egyptian art, followed by the Mesopotamian, Cypriot and Etruscan art, ending with the Greek-Roman art, including Greek originals from the 5th Century BC, Roman remakes of Greek originals and Roman Art.

The Greek collection at the Barracco museum provides an in-depth overview of the great sculptor Polyclitus and his school. Roman art is represented by the head of a boy from the Julian family, an elegant example of private portraiture from the early imperial era (First Century AD).

Sunday was another sunny day in Rome and decided with my husband Giovanni, to head to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni to attend the exhibition devoted to the Italian Maison Bulgari, one of the leading jewelers in the world.

Once inside we were truly amazed by the jewels on display! I would say thrilled by the amount and the quality of what was shown to us mortals!!! Precious stones of all kinds were just few inches away from my fingers and my neck… huge yellow diamonds, deep green emeralds, dark red ruby and more colorful stones all mounted on platinum & gold!

We x-rayed every single jewel of the Bulgari collection of nearly 500 objects created between 1884 and 2009 divided in 8 monumental galleries and one central stage starting from silver artefacts manufactured by the founder of the firm, Sotirio Bulgari, a Greek silversmith who settled in Rome in 1881. The Rome exhibition devotes special attention to some of the most eye catching and famous themes of the Bulgari style such as: ancient Roman and Greek coins mounted in jewelery, snake motifs, the so-called Tubogas and the BVLGARI logo used as a decorative element.

An entire section is dedicated to La Dolce Vita and the company’s close ties with Hollywood cinema industry of the 1950s and 1960s.

We were stunned by the spectacular jewels worn by such great Italian movie superstars as Gina Lollobrigida, Sophia Loren & Anna Magnani. The beauty of the Magnani’s collection could be sum up by her 25 carats ‘Tronbin’ diamond finger!!!

For more breathtaking views & more dreams an entire room is the showcase for the extraordinary Bulgari collection belonging to the great Elizabeth Taylor: enormous emeralds and sapphires in magnificent diamond surrounds characterize the celebrated jewels of her love story with Richard Burton, started in Rome during the filming of Cleopatra.

After a couple of hours of strolling around women’s best friend and companions we decided to take a look at the newly open Colonna Rooftop Bar & Restaurant.

Again we were impressed by the quality of the offer & the attention to design which really caught our eye. The place is open daily from midday to midnight offering the best of the roman cuisine engineered with a new approach.

All in all another wonderful day in Rome!
