Orvieto is probably one of the most beautiful hill top towns in Italy very close to Rome nestled in the heart of Umbria between rolling hills, Etruscan landscapes and views to dream about. A memorable Rome day tour excursion from Rome well suited for Rome’s independent travelers, families visiting Rome with kids and teens, and Rome layover cruise passengers. The countryside that surrounds Orvieto is just stunning. It is a shame that Rome visitors don’t seem to want to explore more of it, focusing instead on some of Tuscany’s better-known areas. Leave the Eternal City behind for a day on your family holiday to Rome and visit Orvieto with a relaxing day trip from Rome.

A Rome day trip of Orvieto highlights includes Orvieto’s most beautiful 14th-century Cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture, sightseeing Orvieto underground tour, 15th century Saint Patrick’s well, Orvieto Papal Palaces, Orvieto impressive medieval buildings, shopping in the Orvieto historical centre famous for hand crafted ceramics and pottery, and a tour of Orvieto restaurants and Orvieto food and wines. In the surrounding landscape that rolls around Orvieto visitors can find very special wines, EVO oils, honey and delicious salami!

La Palomba > Via Manente 16 > E.35

NOTE: Entrance to churches requires appropriate attire and persons wearing shorts, miniskirts or short sleeves will NOT be admitted. It is also advisable to wear comfortable shoes.

How to reach Orvieto

Orvieto is situated in Umbria (central Italy), halfway between Florence and Rome. It is very easy to reach either by car or train.

By Car > From the Autostrada del Sole A1 turnpike, exit at Orvieto. Orvieto is 120 Km (75 miles) north of Rome, 160 Km (100 miles) south of Florence.

By Train > Orvieto is on the main Italian Railway link: Milano-Roma. Trains leave Rome every 2 hours during the day.

" width="614" height="461" />
Gelato in Rome is Heavenly Goood!

While walking the streets of Rome spoil yourself with a cono gelato and soak up the lively Roman atmosphere in one of the amazing piazzas.

For years guidebooks have indicated this gelateria or that one the best in Rome. Truth be told, they are all good and it’s hard to pick a winner! My suggestion: Try them all and then decide which one offers the best gelato experience in Rome!
Before your gelato crawl starts: Try not to become too attached to the taste…you may not find it as good anywhere else.

Old Bridge
These days you can skip the lines when visiting the nearby Vatican Museums but cannot skip the line at the Old Bridge! Favorite by visitors and locals alike for its location and its big portions: Two euros and you’ll get a huge cono loaded with whipping cream. My favorites are lemon and strawberry, very refreshing during the summer heat!

The Old Bridge | Business as Usual!

Gelateria Petrini | Piazza dell’Alberone 16A
A very famous address out the city center, but not far from the ancient Appian Way. Try the amazing semifreddos (gelato cake): Amaretto, Zabajone, and Ameringue but also the fresh sorbetto.

Cremeria Aurelia | Via Aurelia, 398C.
Another great gelato shop where you will find a very innovative approach to Gelato. Try the Red Gold Flavor, a mix of lemon, saffron and ricotta cheese or the Afghan Flavor, a blend of spices and rose petals! Not very far from the Vatican City, share a cab and experience a great gelateria still unknown to most locals!

Rome, Gelateria San Crispino: Did I Mention Only Cups?

Il Gelato di San Crispino
Many people call it the “Best Gelato in Rome”, and it’s definitely one of my favorite places although lately I felt it was a notch, or two, below its usual standards. Remember only cups here. Try the special flavor zabaione, the unmissable Meringue, and the San Crispino Honey Cream.

Giolitti Gelateria Rome

Giolitti
During her first Rome visit First Lady Michelle Obama had lunch on a terrace with a breathtaking view of ancient Rome, while her daughters made and then ate blackberry and banana gelato at the Italian capital’s most famous ice cream parlor: Giolitti! Needless to say: A must for first time visitors!

Gelateria dei Gracchi | Via dei Gracchi, 272.
Gelateria Gracchi, located in the Prati quarter a short walk from Piazza del Popolo, has become a Mecca for Gelato lovers! Pistacchio, Strawberry, Stracciatella and Limoncello are my favorites but there’s a lot more to discover here!

Fatamorgana
Great place to sample amazing flavors all made with natural ingredients. Gelato here is made by artisans offering more than 120 flavors ranging from Punch Paradise to Cheese Cake to the most delicate Basil with Nuts and Honey! Fatamorgana is the ultimate Gelato extravaganza!

Il Mio Gelato Naturale
As suggested by the name here you’ll find only natural gelatos made with bio and fresh ingredients. Located in the Snob Balduina quarter this gelateria offers a truly new experience. Enjoy the rich Caffeine Jamaica Blue Mountains, the extraordinary Dark Chocolate or the Tosca no Black!

Rome: Gelateria Fiocco di Neve

Fiocco di Neve | Via del Pantheon, 51.
Near San Crispino with the Pantheon Dome in sight this small gelateria offers all the usual flavors plus a really good choice of tasty creams like Chocolate and Hazelnut, Torroncino and Zuppa Inglese.

La Fonte della Salute | Via Cardinal Marmaggi, 2.
This is one of the best gelateria in the Trastevere area. Let’s say you just finished your dinner at Panattoni pizza place and still have room for a tasty gelato… this is the right place to sample a hearty ice cream while enjoying this popular roman quarter.

Rome is the capital of Italy and one of the world’s greatest historic cities.
For hundreds of years, Rome was the supreme power of Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia. Rome lies on the banks of the Tiber river in central Italy.
Ancient Rome was built on seven hills. Today the Eternal City encompasses about 20.
The Coliseum, a huge half-ruined amphitheatre, is one of the chief landmarks.
The Vatican City, in the centre of Rome is home to St. Peter’s Church, the world’s largest Christian church and impressive example of Renaissance architecture.
The Trevi Fountain, completed in 1762, is very popular with tourists as it is said that visitors who throw coins into the fountain will someday return to the Eternal City. It also features in a famous scene from Italian director, Federico Fellini’s film La dolce vita.
Throughout Rome there are many beautiful squares, connected by busy streets. The heart of Rome and its commercial centre is around the Piazza Colonna.
People-watching is a popular occupation here as Romans and visitors alike sit in outdoor cafes or stroll through some of the open-air markets.

Pasta. It is said that pasta was first brought to Italy by the ancient Greeks. The first form was called makaria, which is probably what we know as macaroni.

There are an estimated 400 known shapes in existence and a Spaghetti Historical Museum in Pontedassio shows the history of the food.

This all aside, however, pasta is not the staple diet of the Italians as its popularity portrayed. As in many other European countries each region has its own culinary specialty. The sausages of Bologna, the prosciutto (salted ham) of Parma and the minestrone of Milan are just few examples.

Most Italians would not order pasta when they go out to eat but take advantage of some of the finest fruits, vegetables or seafood in Europe has to offer, within their own country.

Shoes. Italian have a reputation for being stylish and well-dressed.
Indeed they spend more on clothes and shoes than any other 27members of the EU. In fact it amounts to 10% of their total expenditure . It is no surprise then perhaps, that these industries are so important to their economy. Italy is Europe’s largest producer of shoes, and the world’s second largest (behind China). Coupled to this, is the industry’s reputation for quality and design. Shoes from Italy have a cachet that cannot be matched by any other country. Perhaps this is in part a reflection on how the Italian shoe industry operates. Traditionally, most firms are small and family run. Until recently, the Gucci firm was a perfect example of this. Their company was set up by Maurizio Gucci in Florence at the turn of the century, and it has grown and diversified ever since. Its famous loafers were worn by the likes of Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly in the 1960s, and in 1980s the firm reiterated its old philosophy of craftsmanship and quality to a new generation, and is enjoying continued success today.

Italian artists played important roles in early Christian art and in the style of the Middle Ages.
Giotto, an artist of the early Renaissance, was part of a revolutionary movement in painting which began showing the human body as three dimensional and did not limit the subject matter to merely religious themes. Renaissance painters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Botticelli also made their works more realistic and introduced changes in the use of colour. Many of Michelangelo’s greatest paintings decorate the ceiling and the front wall of the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. He is widely regarded as the most eminent artist of the Renaissance. Among the best-known modern Italian artists are the painters Giorgio de Chirico and Amedeo Modigliani, the sculptors Giacomo Manzù and Marino Marini and the architect Gino Coppedè.
Every year, countless visitors come to Italy to see some of the priceless art collections and magnificent architecture, Rome and Florence being the two most popular destinations.

Pavarotti has become one of the most famous international opera stars this century. He has also helped to revive its popularity.
Born in Modena, Italy in 1935, Luciano Pavarotti made his professional debut in Reggio Emilia in 1961.

He was widely admired for the warmth and flexibility if his voice, the security of his high notes and the intensity of emotions in his singing. Pavarotti has concentrated almost entirely on Italian operas and songs and his most popular song is a version of Nessum Dorma.

One of the best-selling classical music albums of all time is a recording of the 1994 concert in Los Angeles given by Pavarotti, Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo “The Three Tenors”.

If you’re an avid reader like me, Rome has a fairly good selection of international bookshops, but finding them could be a time-consuming activity. Therefore, I decided to take a pleasant stroll along the ancient and Baroque Rome streets and make a research for you!

My fascinating “research” started hanging downtown Rome around the “Tridente” area where I found quite a few interesting bookstores:

• The Anglo-American Book located in Via della Vite, 102 near the enchanting Spanish Steps. This bookstore has an incredible selection of books, especially on topics like Art and History, and very friendly staff.

• The Lion Book Shop is located on Via dei Greci, 33 close to Via del Corso. Established in 1947, it’s the oldest English-language bookstore in Rome and in the whole of Italy. A small café serving American cookies, cakes and bagels has been added to the store.

• Al Ferro di Cavallo Via Ripetta, 67 close to Piazza del Popolo. Located opposite Rome’s Art Academy, this is considered Rome’s best bookshop when it comes to art, architecture and graphic design tomes, and it doubles as art gallery promoting the work of emerging artists.

• The English Bookshop Via Ripetta, 248 a short walk from Piazza del Popolo. Specialized in non-fiction this bookshop has got a great children’s selection.
After a deserved yummy gelato I took a look at “Ricordi Media Store”, in via Del Corso.
Housed in a white 1930′ building, this huge store offers everything from CDs & DVDs to English videos and magazines, and you can also buy tickets for concerts and events held in Rome.

I kept walking around the Baroque Rome and I got into four amazing bookstores!

1. Amore e Psiche, Via Santa Caterina da Siena, 61, not far from Piazza Navona, is a beautifully designed store with a good range of poetry and art books.

2. From there I moved to the lively Campo dei Fiori area and, in Via dei Banchi Vecchi, 57, I popped in Odradek, an amazing bookshop focused on alternative books.

3. Feltrinelli at Largo Argentina, 5 has got a remarkable selection of books for you to choose from art to literature, history to philosophy, politics and comic books, videos and DVDs, magazines, maps and postcards.

4. While Mel Giannino Stoppani in Piazza dei SS Apostoli, 59A-65 is the Rome’s only children’s bookshop with over 20,000 books in stock.

I kept walking and reached the adjacent Esquilino neighborhood where, close to the enchanting Michelangelo’s Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli prevail the international bookshop Feltrinelli International a real Mecca for books, magazines and guidebooks in English, French and Spanish.

At the end of my pleasant stroll I came across two terrific bookshops in the ancient Roman neighborhood of Trastevere:

1. Bibli in Via dei Fienaroli, 28, perfect for book-junkies and
2. The Open Door Bookshop in Via della Lungaretta, 25 where they sell English books and news on all topics.

There’s only one more ….! There’s a bookstore in Trastevere selling second-hand English books unfortunately I can’t recall the name of the street! Please let me know if you remember that!

The Capitoline Hill between the Roman Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the seven hills on which Rome was built and Roman Empire spread and prospered for several centuries.

The enchanting architectural design of the piazza, which appears before us as we climb the monumental staircase, is a result of the genius of Michelangelo.

The site has been the seat of municipal government throughout the city’s history.
In ancient times, the Capitoline was the political and religious center of Rome. The temple of Jupiter was founded on the southern summit of the hill in 509 B.C. and became the symbol of Rome’s authority as Caput Mundi, head of the world.
During early Christianity, the Capitoline lost its political importance and was completely abandoned.
The Capitoline took on its new occupation in 1471 when Pope Sixtus IV gave the Romans four bronze statues previously preserved in the Lateran palace, decreeing the opening of the first public museum in the world.
Plans for repaving the piazza, the renovation of the facades and the addition of the Palazzo Nuovo were drawn up by Michelangelo. The facade of the pre-existing Palazzo Senatorio was transformed, while the medieval and Renaissance interior was preserved.
In 1565, under Pope Pius IV, works on the Palazzo dei Conservatori were initiated. The project was finally completed with the construction of the Palazzo Nuovo, on the left side of the piazza, inaugurated only in 1734.
The Capitol is a Museum complex enormous historic and cultural value, of which the piazza, the palaces, the archeological and artistic collections, and the main ancient monuments all play an important role.
The formation of the Capitoline collections of ancient art began in the 15th century with Pope Sixtus IV’s gift of the four bronze statues: the She-wolf, the Spinario, the statue of Camillo, and Constantine’s head.

Tough each of numerous masterpieces in the complex deserves a special mention, the museum’s protagonists are without doubts the well-preserved, imposing and beautiful statues.
Also well-worth seeing are the mosaics, busts, halls, inscriptions, stucco, frescos, tapestries, reliefs, colorful marble panels and flooring.

Capitoline Museums' Marbles

In the courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori, pieces of the colossal statue of Constantine are on display. The famous Sala della Lupa (room of the She-wolf) gets its name from one of the most suggestive symbols of the history of Rome, the She-wolf feeding Romulus and Remus.

19th Century Copy of the She-Wolf

The painting gallery, situated in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, houses works dating back from the late Middle Ages to the 17th century, amazing witnesses of the changes that took place in Italian art through the centuries.

The Capitoline Hall of Medals, located in Palazzo Clementino, comprises the numismatic, medal and jewelry collections. Brought together in 1872, this vast collection include ancient and modern coins, medieval and Renaissance 19th century medals and much more to explore and discover.
Few years ago, the Tabularium was also opened to the public. The Tabularium was the ancient Roman Record Office where the official acts of the Roman state, together with the bronze Tabulae, where stored.
The visitor can no go from one palace to the other by using this tunnel which run below the level of the Museum but overlooks the Roman Forum on the other side.
The number of masterpieces on display at the Capitoline Museums is so great that more than one visit would be needed to appreciate them.
