We have just returned from a week in Roma, staying at the Suore Mantellate Serve di Maria, steps from Piazza Navona and Campo dei Fiori, at Via S. Giuseppe Calasanzio. Our party was me--a fairly well-traveled Jewish matron, and my 15-year old son. We chose the convent because we wanted to have more cash to shop. The rooms are clean as a whistle, the shower is fine, breakfast is simple but very good and free, and the beds are small, but very comfortable. However, I would advise bringing a pillow; there are lots of pillows in the room, but they are all apparently made of the same rock upon which the church was founded....

What a great idea! Some of the hostels in Rome are downright awful, this sounds like a great alternative. Thanks for the tip!

That's a terrific site for visiting Italy in an unusual and very interesting way and I am sure you will enjoy Sicily and her history, food and sea.

Good article but there is an easy way to book monasteries or convents in Rome. Have a look at www.monasterystays.com which I found when a friend recommend I stay in a convent on my next trip to Sicily. It is an on-line booking service which takes the hassle out of making your own bookings. Heaps of places in Rome to choose from.
